Anyone who has baked with kids know two things: first, it’s a lot of fun for both the adult and the child; and second, it can get really messy. The third thing that you may or may not know is the developmental benefits baking has on the child. Numerous articles on the web have talked about this, so I will just recap:
- exercise fine motor skills by mixing, kneading and separating eggs
- learn simple math skills like counting, measuring and fractions
- reinforce strong social skills and manners like passing ingredients to one another and sharing tasks
- develop better self esteem by knowing they accomplished an adult task and sharing / tasting the fruit of their labor
- develop healthy eating habits by learning to make their own food
- acquire new vocabulary as it relate to cooking and baking like “crimp”, “glaze”, and “grate”.
That’s all fun until it’s time to clean up. Cleanup can take just as long if not longer than the actual baking. If you dislike cleanup time as much as we do, then consider our friends at Keremo Cakes.
Keremo Cakes is a small local homey bakery that makes AH-MAZE-ING cakes. The space is extremely cute with Parisian inspired decor enclosed in light pastel / powder purple walls. Check out some of their work on their facebook fan page. It was started by three amazing women, and Bubboli loves and supports local businesses. We absolutely fell in love with their made to order cakes and found out they actually started Bake Camp for Kids, which is a three day bootcamp for kids to learn to bake their own sweets like the popular cake pops. Since the business is still new, the ladies just started experimenting with the idea. They did one session from Aug. 5 th- Aug. 8th and a second session from Aug. 12th - Aug. 15th. Since feedback has been positive, they plan on opening up more sessions during the holidays so kids can make their own holiday treats to contribute to the Thanksgiving feast or Christmas presents for grandma and grandpa! Keremo also hosts cupcake decorating birthday parties where children get super creative and decorate custom cupcakes - with the special theme selected by the birthday boy or girl!
There are a lot of options out there for baking classes for kids, but what Bubboli likes the most about the one held at Keremo Cakes is that kids get to learn to bake in a real commercial space with commercial appliances. Talk about getting a head start on career day! Moreover, for kids to learn to bake from a place they get their birthday cakes from adds another level of familiarity and intimacy to the experience that cannot be replicated at most other places.
Whether you are baking at home with the kids or sending them off to a professional, this is one fun and educational experience!
